Celebrate Easter, Naturally
It’s a tradition to dye eggs for Easter, but have you ever tried using fruit and vegetables to make the dyes? It’s simple! Most of these items you can find in your pantry or at a local market. This is a great project the whole family can enjoy!
Step 1: Ingredients for the Dye
- Red/Pink – chopped beets
- Orange – yellow onion skins
- Yellow – turmeric (add to boiling water)
- Blue – red/purple cabbage
- Brown/Green – Spinach
- Purple/silver/blue – blueberries (skip vinegar)
Step 2: Making the Dye
- Combine one quart of water and two tablespoons white vinegar in a medium pot.
- Bring to a boil and add your dye ingredients (See above color section).
- Once boiling, lower heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Let cool.
- Strain dye before adding the eggs. Once strained, let soak for at least 30 minutes. Note: For a brighter color, let it soak longer.
- Remove with tongs and pat dry.
Tips and Tricks
Can I use brown eggs?
Yes! The end color may vary, though brown eggs can result in a richer tone. (1)
Get Creative!
Have your kids draw on eggs with a wax crayon or add tape before dying. Gently remove the tape after dying.
Experiment for Brighter Colors
Leaving the eggs in the dye longer can result in a brighter color. However, try dipping them multiple times. (2) This will create layers of dye that will also create a vibrant end result.
Stay Clean
Though these egg dyes are safe, they will stain clothing and skin. We recommend wearing old clothes and laying a bed of newspaper down for easy clean-up.
Keep even cleaner by using tongues to remove the eggs from the dyes.
